2014 INDEPENDENT FILM FEST BOSTON
We saw an opportunity to apply UX design to advance Independent Film Festival Boston's efforts and visibility to create a more connected, inspired experience for festival goers and filmmakers. On the cusp of their 2014 season, we volunteered to start an evolutionary process to update their website design and build, brand, and campaign concept process.
We learned that the festival cycle actually runs year-round. At various times of the year, there may be a call for entries, a call for volunteers, film lineup announcements, ticket sales, panel events, and a plethora of screenings and events between the "main events". We needed to provide the festival team with a publishing method and design that could handle constant updates made by multiple team members, while giving campaign design and film images a place to stand out.
We spoke to the festival team about their website needs, learning about how the festival runs behind the scenes and what they’d like to do better going forward. We often start a project by asking a lot of questions to understand the business or ecosystem of an organization’s operations. From that, we draft information architecture maps so everyone understands the bird’s-eye view of the project.
A modular plan for the homepage.
Wireframes describe how to use the modular homepage based on different times of the yearly festival cycle.
The resulting homepage design. The top portion of the homepage feature is very prominent to pay homage to movies and the "big screen".
The second half of the homepage houses a modular tile system that is easily updateable and swappable depending on the festival team’s needs. The design is now built on a CMS platform to support an ever-changing roster of activities and calls to action. We continue to evolve the typographic styles and tile library to ensure cohesion and scannability without losing a look of energy and robustness.
We designed a series of pages that stem from the "Get Involved" navigation—very important calls to action that the festival relies on for support. These pages also have corresponding tiles on the homepage to better drive involvement and donations.
The festival is coming up on its 15th anniversary and has an amazing history of films and photographs to share. We designed a "Past Festivals" section to house the archive of past festival films, photos and videos, complete with search and filtering tools.
